Chain Link Fence: How to Choose the Ideal Model

Here are four items to keep an eye out for when choosing your fence material.

1. Gauge

This has to do with the thickness of the wire that is used in the mesh of the fence. The thicker the mesh, the lower the gauge number. That is, 6 gauge wire is thicker than 13 gauge wire. And the thicker that wire, the more robust the fence – and consequently, more expensive too.

Typically, 6 gauge fences are used to fence off commercial properties that need more security. In homes, it is quite common to use 9 gauge, for example. And finally, fences made with 13 gauge wire, that is, thinner, are used to create temporary fences.

2. Grid Size

The size of the grid is the space between the wires that make up the fence. The smaller this space, the stronger the fence – but the more material is used to make it. That is, it is also more expensive.

The size of the grid depends a lot on the purpose of the fence – to fence a sports field, for example, the most recommended is a sturdier fence. After all, a more fragile model can be easily damaged if repeatedly hit by balls. The same goes for properties with big dogs.

If the objective is just to separate areas within a vegetable or flower garden, for example, there is no need to spend on a fence that is very robust.

3. Material

Most chain link fences are made of stainless steel, which is a very durable material and not very susceptible to damage. But there is also the option of aluminum, which is a lighter material. So if your goal is to build a temporary fence – or one that can be moved more easily, this may be the most suitable material.

4. Coating

As we have already discussed here, the material used in the manufacture of the fences is normally already galvanized, which is a process that makes it resistant to oxidation, rust and damage caused by the sun. Fences made with this material are the most recommended. But if you want an even more resistant option, you can choose the coated versions – which in addition can come in different colors.
