Vancouver Fencing Company Offers Aluminum Care Tips
Every fence shares one thing in common—exposure to the elements. As a Vancouver Fence Installation Company, the team at QS Fencing have put together some useful tips and advice to help fence owners protect their investment.
Contrary to popular belief, aluminium fences aren’t rust proof. However, the rust buildup is mostly benign. Rather than turning orange, flaking off, and weakening the structure like iron, aluminum simply forms a thin layer of chalky white residue over its surface. This can be easily cleaned off with a homemade acid solution that can help buff up its appearance.
One simple solution is to mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a bucket and sponge the surface of the fence. It might be necessary to repeat the process if the oxidation is heavy. Remember to rinse the solution off once completed, especially if this is in preparation for painting the fence.
Paint can add an extra layer of protection to a fence, but it needs to be applied properly if it is going to last. Remove any dirt, oils or other residues that might affect the paint sticking to the surface. Use a wire brush to remove any loose pieces of metal or old paint (if applicable). Then give it a wash with soap and water, or, if mildew is involved, another treatment of vinegar and water. Rinse it clean, then use a conversion coating to prepare it for the paint.
Just like with any other surface, it’s important to prime the fence in two thin coats to help prevent the paint from running, then wait for it to dry before applying the main coat of paint on top. With a little love and care, aluminium fences will look beautiful over the course of a lifetime.
